Foundations... why are they important...

When starting out in any exercise regime, there are a number of things that need to be taken into account in order to safely get the ball rolling toward your health and fitness goals. Your foundations of functional exercise should be top priority, and should be mastered before taking on any type of progression in either form and/or intensity.

Think of your exercise foundations in terms of the foundations of a building. Often they are of great expense, in tems of both price and time, but are an absolute necessity and should precede the construction of any other structural advances being put into place.

Yes you could in theory construct a building without a solid foundation, but what is going to happen to that structure after 5 or 10 years??? That's right, it will more that likely fall apart.

Your body is exactly the same in terms of safety, so you should really take the necessary time in building yourself a structurally solid foundation to ensure a strong, stable, efficient unit. Do this, and you will run into far less drama's in the long run.

What kind of foundations are we talking about?

Functional Foundations

Functional Foundations are those exercises that mimic the Movement Patterns of everyday activities including those of pushing an object away from yourself, pulling an object toward yourself, lifting an object from the ground, and lifting yourself from the ground.

These Functional Movement Patterns will include:

The Squat

Hip Hinge

Horizontal Push

Vertical Pull

So by now you should have a better understanding of the mechanics involved with your everyday actions and in these foundational exercises. Feel free to have a go at the above exercises but make sure you stay aware of your technique. Like I stated earlier, it is imperative that you master these basics before progressing onto your more advanced variations of any exercise.
