Hey guys it's Jared from Fight 4 Life and today I want to talk to you about variety and show you a really handy trick to keeping you positive and smashing full steam ahead in regards to continuously improving your strength, conditioning and mindset.
So I have a new client and she's been doing really well lately toward improving her running game, consistently improving on her times and efforts. We went for another run the other day, and I could see that she was battling some pretty powerful demons, so I was forced to re-assess the situation as I knew that with her current mindset, she was going to fail to reach a new personal best.
So how did we fix this? Out came King of the Wing to the rescue. Instead of doing the same 3.4 km track that we'd consecutively been improving upon, we took off in another direction for a first attempt on a 5 km track. This immediately released her from the pressure of having to beat her PB seeing as this was the first time she'd attempted the track, it was all new and exciting.
So in the end, instead of having a really shitty day of PT, she completed her first 5 Km, set her benchmark time, and realised the power of the mind body connection as her anxiety of not performing completely disappeared as soon as we took off in the new direction of the new Run. This resulted in 3 mental wins as opposed to 1 big fat loss...
Quite often people can let the pressure of having to perform get the better of them, and with the power of the mind-body connection, this negative mindset can have detrimental affects on your running performance. Now the last thing we want as Fit Pro's is a negative hit to our clients confidence so quite often you will be forced to mix it up in order to still earn those extremely valuable mental wins.
We may have been talking about running in this particular case but adding variety to our workouts will cross over into every area of physical adaptations. So how exactly can we bring variety into our running game.
We can try a completely new running track.
We can change the type of running from steady state, to sprints.
We can also go for a run up a mountain track or add a series of exercises in intervals as we run.
The list goes on, but now you can see that there is a handful of solutions that we can use to improve on our mindset and mix up our running game to keep it exciting and keep those improvements coming.
So the message here is, if you find that you are battling the horrible, 'I don't think I can beat it' demons, then instead of upsetting yourself and taking a hit to your confidence and motivation, spin that shit on a dime, and choose a different means of having a great run. Running is one of the most powerful forms of mental conditioning out there, so you need to capitalise on achieving as many mental wins as humanly possible when you run if you want to continue to grow in both anaerobic and aerobic conditioning, not to mention your mental conditioning as well.
Now I pray that you took some value out of this, so let's have a conversation, I'd really love to know, what exactly was it that you found most valuable from this particular blog entry? Feel free to drop your answer or any questions to do with health, fitness and mindset in the comments below.
By the way, next week we're going to talk about one of the methods that we use here at Fight 4 Life that you can use to change your runs up a bit so stay tuned for that one. Until then, Thanks for reading and I look forward to talking to you soon. Take care and Stay Motivated.
